‘Understand’ to help Man Utd sign Cody Gakpo after Antony’s £67.6m bid failed; Tottenham close to signing No 8

An ‘understanding’ could help Man Utd sign Cody Gakpo after seeing Ajax shut the door on Antony, while Tottenham close in on the number eight finish – both in Friday’s Transfer Gossip.

GAKPO CENTER OF ATTENTION

Ajax rejected a £67.6million bid for Antony, leading Manchester United to shift their gaze to Cody Gakpo who seems much more approachable for two reasons, according to reports.

While most headlines are made by United rapid progress in pursuit of CasemiroUnited have irons in the fire on other fronts as well.

Yetzerday transfer gossip revealed that five new signings are on the agenda in four different positions.

Winger is one, and by athleticsUnited have tabled a whopping £67.6m bid for Ajax ace Antony.

The Amsterdam club have already sold several key players this summer and are understandably keen to draw a line in the sand. As such, they rejected the offer and the report claims United are not optimistic that an even higher bid will be successful.

Instead, a move for fellow Eredivisie player Cody Gakpo is now their target. The telegraph backing up that claim, and even naming Atletico Madrid’s Yannick Carrasco as a backup option for the backup.

Anyway, 23-year-old Gakpo scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists for PSV Eindhoven last season. He picked up exactly where he left off, already having three goals and four assists to his name this year.

Two factors helping Gakpo to Man Utd cause

Previous reports suggested he could be signed for around £35million, around half Antony’s price.

This is one factor that makes it more accessible, although it is not the only one.

In effect, athleticism note that when Gakpo signed a new contract with PSV in January, an ‘understanding’ was struck which would see PSV ‘co-operate’ if a suitable offer were made this summer.

fabrice romano added his take to the story, claiming that Gakpo was personally offered as a target by Erik ten Hag.

Although a potential transfer from Gakpo seems possible, it may take a week to wait.

sky sports claimed that PSV would not sell until their Champions League fate was determined.

PSV are currently in the qualifying play-off stage and drew 2-2 in the first leg of their draw with Rangers on Wednesday. The second leg takes place on Wednesday August 24. A movement by Gakpo could accelerate after this date.

WILL SPURS BEAT CHELSEA AND MAN UTD?

Tottenham are close to beating Chelsea and Man Utd to the signing of Blackburn Rovers sensation Ashley Phillips, according to reports.

The 17-year-old centre-half, who is already 6ft 4in tall, is one of the best prospects the Championship has produced in recent times.

He has already made his league debut this season when he turned 17 in June. Indeed, he earned 71 minutes of action against West Brom last week before playing all 90 minutes last night against Reading.

Phillips appeared on Tottenham’s radar from February. However, his rapid rise has also seen Chelsea and Man Utd take notice.

But according to the Daily Mailit is the Spurs who are in the best position to win the race.

They state that once Fabio Paratici gives his approval, Tottenham will strike. Paratici was expected to be at Blackburn’s clash with Reading on Thursday night.

The sun shed more light on the potential move, claiming a £3million bid will be tabled. Phillips is out of contract next summer and all signs point to Blackburn cashing in.

If signed, Phillips will sign the No.8 in what has been an incredibly successful window in north London.

CASEMIRO MOVING TO HAVE NEWCASTLE INVOLVEMENTS?

Finally, Real Madrid would value a Newcastle gem if they sell Casemiro to Manchester United.

The likes of Tchouameni and Camavinga will be eager to take Casemiro’s minutes. However, a club the size of Real Madrid has deep pockets and an even deeper squad.

As such, the Spanish outlet AS Newcastle talisman Bruno Guimaraes is in their sights to replace Casemiro.

The Brazilian only signed for the Magpies in the winter window. It cost around £40million, although it wasted little time making that price look like a knock off.

Indeed, since his England debut, Guimaraes has led all Premier League players regardless of position in tackles made, duels won and fouls won. He is also second in through balls and fourth in successful dribbling.

Newcastle’s project will be significantly delayed if they lose Guimaraes. Luckily for Magpies fans, they are fully aware of the gem they have.

Fabrice Romano tweeted Guimaraes has ‘always been highly rated’ by Real Madrid. However, Newcastle consider their Brazilian midfielder ‘not for sale’.
