Red Sox sign Refsnyder 10/11/22

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox agreed to terms with the outfielder yesterday Rob Refsnyder on a one-year contract for the 2023 season, thus avoiding salary arbitration.

Additionally, the mutual option between the Red Sox and the outfielder Tommy Pham was refused by both parties. Pham is now a free agent.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Refsnyder, 31, hit .307 (47 for 153) with an .881 OPS, 17 extra hits and 21 RBI in 57 games for Boston last season while making 16 starts in right field, 13 in center field and two in left field. The right-handed hitter set career highs in 2022 in batting average, on-base percentage (.384), OPS, hits, doubles (11), homers (6), RBI and FanGraphs WAR (1.3). Among American League players with at least 50 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers in 2022, Refsnyder ranked fifth in batting average (.359) and seventh in OPS (1.005).

Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the fifth round of the June 2012 University of Arizona Draft, Refsnyder played 289 games for the Yankees (2015-17), Toronto Blue Jays (2017), Rays of Tampa Bay (2018), Texas Rangers (2020), Minnesota Twins (2021) and Red Sox (2022).
