Back when a TV in a home was a luxury and not necessarily a given, one of the region’s most valuable resources was the TV repairman – because they could breathe new life into the old tube. with a kind of technical magic.
Then the cost of TVs went down, depth went from several feet to six inches and picture quality went up – meaning we wanted new all the time and we happily shipped our older sets to the electronic slaughterhouse.
But when did we stop fixing things so completely that such a skill became so unique it warranted a TV show in its own right?
The Repair Shop is one of those beautifully made BBC programs where people – normally very old people – show up with things from their youth and ask a team of extremely talented craftsmen to bring them back to life.
Sometimes it’s big jobs like massive grandfather clocks that haven’t ticked or chimed in decades, or stereo systems that won’t spin or tune – and sometimes that’s just a old rusty toy that still holds magical memories in the folds of its cracked sound. Painting.
There is a whole strand where people bring things that, for example, soldiers fashioned in the trenches during the Second World War – leather bags, wallets, wooden objects – or their grandchildren want to restore sympathetically a helmet without removing the bump from the ball. the top of it.
