Calvin Bassey: Ajax are close to agreeing a deal to sign the Rangers defender in a deal worth over £20m | Transfer Center News

Rangers Calvin Bassey is set to join Ajax after the two clubs agreed a deal for the defender.

The fee is £18.7m (€22m), but with add-ons it could rise to £22.9m (€27m), with the deal also including a fee 10% sale.

Bassey’s departure will see Rangers pocket a club-record fee for a player who cost them just £230,000 from Leicester two years ago. Rangers sold academy graduate Nathan Patterson to Everton in a deal worth up to £16million in January.

The highly rated defender was attracting interest from Brighton and clubs across Europe, including Bundesliga and Serie A sides.

Sky Sports News reported in May that Bassey was also a target for former Gers boss Steven Gerrard, now at Aston Villa.

It is understood Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder spoke to Bassey on the phone and was impressed with the Dutch club preparing an official offer as they seek to replace Lisandro Martinez, who is set to join Manchester United .

Bassey made 50 appearances in all competitions last season and was named in the Europa League Team of the Season following Rangers’ run to the final.

Boyd: Rangers will miss versatile Bassey

Kris Boyd says Rangers will struggle to replace a player as talented as Calvin Bassey should he leave for the club.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd told Sky Sports News:

“Especially towards the end of that season, and the Europa League run that Rangers had, Bassey was amazing. He’s also versatile; he can play left-back, he can play left of a two, to the left of a three, the center of a three and I think that’s why he’s attracted to clubs. We know these days that when teams are looking for players they’re looking at them to cover a lot of positions and he, Bassey, certainly falls into this category.

“Those performances towards the end of the season for Rangers were outstanding and you felt like the team believed in that a lot as well. They didn’t have to protect the backline as much because of his pace, his recovery, If he has to leave, as it looks like he will, he will be greatly missed by Rangers.

“Players have left in the past and they’ve substituted, but I think this one might be a bit difficult because of that versatility. I think Rangers will need cover. Borna Barisic is there, but he has also been linked with moves away So they’re going to need someone to come in at left back, and someone who can play on the left side of a two or a three as well as behind the loss of Bassey.

“Virgil van Dijk has proven that at the highest level, but I think it’s very tough for such a young boy, right now it’s time to label him. But he’s showing he has the attributes, he’s got the pace, he’s got the aggression, he’s good on the ball, he can defend one-on-one, so he’ll be an attractive signing for someone.
